New school year, new confidence: why September is the best time to start judo

Why September is the right time to start

The start of a new school year is when families rebuild their weekly routine from scratch. Bedtimes reset, schedules firm up, and it’s the natural moment to add one new activity that actually sticks. That makes September the single best time of year to enrol your child in judo.

There’s a practical reason, too. Judo classes at Kohbukan run on a continuous schedule rather than fixed seasonal terms, so your child joins a class that’s finding its rhythm for the year. New students who start in the fall build their foundation alongside the returning members and have a full year ahead to progress through their first belt ranks.

What makes judo different from other fall activities

Every September, Guelph parents weigh the usual options — soccer, hockey, swimming, karate. Judo earns a place on that shortlist for a few reasons:

  • It teaches kids how to fall safely. The first skill every judoka learns is ukemi — breakfalls. It’s a useful life skill that pays off on the playground, the ice, and the sidewalk, and it’s a big part of why judo has such a strong safety record.
  • There’s no striking. Judo is grappling only — throws and groundwork, no punching or kicking. Parents who want a martial art without the striking often land on judo for that reason.
  • It’s an Olympic sport. Judo has been contested at the Olympics since 1964, so a child with real ambition has somewhere to take it.
  • It builds character. Respect, self-control, and perseverance are built into how judo is taught — bowing on and off the mat, working carefully with a partner, and earning each belt through steady effort.
  • It’s Guelph’s only judo club. If your child wants to try judo, Kohbukan is the only place in the city to do it.

Easing the back-to-school transition

The first weeks of school can be a lot for kids — new teachers, new expectations, and the end of summer’s freedom. The right activity can help with that transition:

  • It burns energy in a structured way. Two evenings a week of focused movement helps kids settle and sleep better.
  • It builds a second social circle. A judo club is a small, tight-knit group. For a child who’s shy at school or switching schools, the club is somewhere they’re known outside the classroom.
  • It builds confidence outside the classroom. Learning to throw and to fall gives kids a sense of capability that carries back into school.

How to start this fall

Children’s judo at Kohbukan runs Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15 PM at 10 Speedvale Ave E (2nd floor) in Guelph, for ages 6 to 14. Here’s the easy way to begin:

  1. Book a free trial week. Your child’s first week is completely free — no commitment and no credit card required. It’s the best way to see if judo clicks for them.
  2. Come as you are. We’ll lend a judo gi (uniform) for the trial. A t-shirt underneath and bare feet are all your child needs.
  3. Watch the first class. Parents are welcome to stay and watch. You’ll see the breakfalls, the partner work, and the structure of a typical class first-hand.
  4. Decide with no pressure. If it’s a fit, our monthly plan has no long-term contract, so you’re never locked in.
